I really work with some wonderful colleagues in UCI Social Ecology. A day ahead of my birthday, several staged a surprise party. As I told them, it's a rare treat to work with folks who are smart and good-hearted with an excellent sense of humor.

After the drama of the last week, it is gratifying to be able to celebrate our graduates at Nuestra Graduacion at UC Irvine. Get ready for the (semi) live tweeting.

Almost all of those recognized tonight -- and it is a packed house -- are the first in their family to graduate college. Many come from hard working class backgrounds. Their accomplishments are American at its finest.

The highlight of the night is when they get to come on stage with their family members. Somehow, I always seem to forget to bring kleenex when I need it.
