Juneteenth (Jun. 19, 1865) wasn't the day enslaved people were freed; it was the day enslaved people in Texas were told they had been free... for over two years. President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation went into effect Jan. 1, 1863, but was ignored by Confederate states.
