Years of reporting on assisted dying has convinced me that it can be done safely. In our cover story this week I try to take an evidenced-based approach to an emotive topic, but know there are other views! So today: Which country should we be comparing ourselves to—🇨🇦 or 🇦🇺? A🧵

The Australian and NZ experience is unequivocal. Don't listen to the naysayers. Listen to the evidence. Assisted dying is compassionate and safe. The status quo is unacceptable.

In Australia and NZ, assisted dying is an accepted part of end of life care. Laws are safe and working as intended, and fulfilling their aims of offering choice and relieving suffering. #assisteddyingbill gogentleaustralia.org.au/are_vad_laws_f…

It is extraordinary that the UK has not looked to Australia & NZ on assisted dying. Almost 6yrs of experience, showing AD laws are safe & working as intended. The fear mongering is baseless. The status quo is cruel & unacceptable. #assisteddyingbill insightplus.mja.com.au/2024/32/a-good…

I wrote an article for Prospect about my mother's death. She died in August, from metastatic breast cancer. But because she lived in NSW, Australia, she could choose Voluntary Assisted Dying. I want others to be allowed to select such a good death! prospectmagazine.co.uk/ideas/a-good-d…

It is also offensive to ignore the vast majority of terminally ill people and the public who desperately want this choice at the end of life, and to ignore the years of evidence from Australia and NZ that says these laws are safe and compassionate.

Congratulations to everyone who worked tirelessly, sometimes over decades, to see this reform in the UK. Protecting vulnerable terminally ill people and giving them choice at the end of life is a sign of a truly compassionate society 💞👏

Such strength from Caroline Voaden MP in the Terminally Ill Adults Bill debate❤️ So many real people with real stories show how the status quo is failing far too many families and why the law needs to change to give #ChoiceAtTheEndOfLife #AssistedDying

Objecting to voluntary assisted dying is one thing. But carelessly – or worse, knowingly – telling lies and spreading misinformation is not OK. This grieving NSW family deserved better. gogentleaustralia.org.au/how_anti_vad_w…
