Jews in the first century ate food with their hands. In the Bible, the Pharisees criticise Jesus and his disciples as to why they weren't washing their hands before eating 🤮 It is attested in two gospels - so it is more likely to be historically true. E.g. Matthew, Chapter 15:

Context: Jews had a tradition of washing hands before eating food. Jesus and his disciples broke this tradition. When the Jewish leaders questioned him, he said "What goes into your mouth never defiles you. What comes out of mouth does". He goes on to call them blind
