Sad news: Mel Potter, one of the pillars of the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Assn the last 70 years, the 2015 PRCA Legend of the Rodeo, died Saturday in Tucson, his hometown. A Tucson High and UA grad, he is the father of 4-time world champion Barrel Racer Sherry Cervi.

Saddened to learn that Bill Demory, Arizona's starting QB from 1971-73, died. He was 74. Demory was Arizona's only QB to play in an NFL game from 1974 until 2012, when Nick Foles reached the NFL. Demory was a long-time educator in Phoenix.

Saddened to hear that Mel Karrle, the coach of Sean Elliott at Cholla High School and one of Tucson's top tennis players of the last 60 years, has died in Tucson. Coached Cholla to 1985 state semifinals.

Cedric Dempsey, who died Saturday in San Diego, survived cancer 3 times, prevailed over 2 heart surgeries to live 94 years. He was probably the top athletic director in the last 50 years of the Pac-12. More than that, he was a wonderful man and leader.

Pat Flood, one of the leading figures in Tucson football history, died Sunday. He QB'd Tucson High to 1951 and 1952 state titles, played at Notre Dame and Navy and was the Pac-12's top football referee for almost 40 years. A Phoenix attorney, Flood was 88.
