To address the multifaceted challenges posed by plastic pollution, including its gendered impacts, Ghana National Plastic Action Partnership 🇬🇭 undertook a Gender Analysis of the Plastics and Plastic Waste Sectors in Ghana in May 2021. Catch highlights of our newly published report!

With predictions of increased #plastic production and consumption, growing concerns exist about the multiplying environmental impacts. These issues affect different groups in the #plasticindustry and are influenced by factors such as gender inequality and #socialinclusion.

Women #waste pickers in #Ghana earn less than men due to their limited time to pick. This wage gap reflects traditional #gender roles, which require women to balance home chores and fieldwork, resulting in less time for waste picking. #GenderEquality #WasteManagementGhana

Our study shows approximately 15% of waste pickers are children aged 5-12. This significantly impacts school attendance and the overall health of these children, leading to visible skin infections, diarrhoea, coughing, and runny nose. #ChildLabor #WasteManagement #Ghana

Engaging with #wastepickers uncovered that while 85.71% have physical access to #healthfacilities, 75% encounter obstacles in fully utilizing them. The study also found that 64.21% of informal workers, mainly women, face challenges accessing #educationalfacilities.

The Ghana National Plastic Action Partnership 🇬🇭 workshop promoted equality and inclusivity in addressing plastic waste in Ghana and #empowering #marginalized voices. Discussions included NPAP Ghana #SocialInclusion Strategy and training on Sexual and #GenderBasedViolence for informal waste actors. 🌿♻️
