Guildford’s Friary Brewery, as an affiliated society of @the_rhs, awarded this medal to Mr R.A.F. Winsloe in 1947. It shows two Roman Goddesses, Pomona and Flora, who represent flowers, fruit trees, gardens, and orchards. We hope you’re enjoying #NationalGardeningWeek 2025.

This week we’re remembering #VEDay 80 years ago. This rudder is from a V-1, or doodlebug, that destroyed St. James’ Church, Abinger Common in 1944. V-1 flying bombs were unmanned aircraft used by Germany. The church wasn’t rebuilt until 1951 due to shortages after the war.

Today marks 80 years since VE Day, when the Second World War ended in Europe. Edith Gaskell marked the day in her diary with “Marvellous! Breakfast in bed.” Edith lived in Blackheath, Surrey, during the war and opened her doors, as a place of safety, to four young evacuees.

English Delftware tiles were a popular form of decoration for grand mansion houses. The tiles from Whitmores date from the 17th century and were used in the fireplace surrounds. This tile with a snail in the centre is one of many country creatures to be used as inspiration.

Guildford’s Lido holds many fond memories for local people. In 2022 the lido was refurbished for its 90th birthday, and one of the old blue changing room doors was donated to the museum. We’re proud to be able to preserve this piece of history from such a well-loved attraction!
