I find it strange that this incident has brought up the ‘scrap VAR’ debate. The officials on field also got it wrong, and VAR showed everyone watching at the time that it was wrong. Without VAR that’s disallowed 100% of the time, with it, it is disallowed 1% of the time

Malan should have been batting 3, Root not played white ball at all really since 2019 and England’s whole success in ODI has been with two attacking batters opening which Malan isn’t but still must be in the team

Not to come across as VAR’s biggest defender today, but this stuff isn’t helpful. The ball was in play the whole time, no pause or disruption; they were just in the background checking a potential error, found one, rectified it.

Finally some sense on VAR from today. They came to the correct decision and can take as long as needed when the game is going on. Also on the Arsenal ones, both the pen decision and disallowed goal were ruled out on field so without VAR the exact same decisions are being made

Absolutely no problem with England cricketers having a few drinks during a scheduled mini-break in the Test series. Has to be rest, relaxation, downtime for young guys on an arduous tour. Different if night before the game. This is not why England lost.
