The Ahrar Gaza group which is said to be organizing recent protests calling on Hamas to stop the fighting, announced that one of its main organizers, Mohamed Abdel Salam Abu Tabaneh, was arrested in Rafah by Hamas, where he was tortured to death, and he died yesterday in custody

UNRWA has long served as the convenient puzzle piece to preserving the status quo that eventually caused the region to explode. And Netanyahu fears revelations of ties with Gaza armed groups will compromise the UNRWA cooperation in the West Bank that enables the status quo there.

Resistance to Hamas in Rafah, where more than 70% of Gazans now live, is rising to unprecedented levels. This resistance is shared by both local families and the displaced from northern Gaza. This will not bode well for the common perception in the media.

These protests are not against Israel, but at the governance situation, and they would have been impossible years ago (many Gazans still feel their broken knee caps from even posting against Hamas on Facebook in 2019 and 2022)
