Qld provides a decarbonization template for the country - today moving to legislate 80% renewables by 2035 with publicly owned infrastructure and a jobs guarantee. Now we need to see strong emissions reduction targets to back it in ... couriermail.com.au/news/queenslan… via The Courier-Mail

It’s still October but Queensland already has bushfires burning and many people are rightly worried about the prospect of a catastrophic summer of heatwaves and fire storms, fuelled by the continued burning of coal and gas. #qldpol #auspol acf.org.au/qld-oct-bushfi…

CSIRO estimates of greenhouse gas emissions from the Beetaloo Basin and the Middle Arm gas hub at Darwin Harbour are flat out wrong, says Climate Analytics’s Bill Hare in The Conversation - Australia + New Zealand. These projects are carbon bombs and must not proceed. theconversation.com/the-beetaloo-g…

REPORT: the projected emissions of the Northern Territory's proposed #Beetaloo Basin #gas fracking project & the Middle Arm LNG precinct in Darwin Harbour - as given to the NT and Federal govts - have been widely underestimated. A 🧵 climateanalytics.org/latest/beetalo…

Climate Analytics (@ca_latest) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Everywhere we looked, we found the CSIRO-GISERA report on the #beetaloo project had significantly underestimated emissions factors: - the emissions intensity of fracked gas - methane loss - LNG production, - the availability of offsets & - the capture rate for CCS. How so?

Climate Analytics (@ca_latest) 's Twitter Profile Photo

CSIRO GISERA have assumed an unrealistically low methane leakage rate of 0.7-1%. The average observed in the United States from fracking operations - of 2.3% - is much more likely. This is one of the biggest sources of their emissions underestimation.

Climate Analytics (@ca_latest) 's Twitter Profile Photo

The upstream emissions intensity estimated by CSIRO GISERA is up to two times lower than estimated for shale gas in US, China, EU. Upstream emissions include all production related emissions, reservoir CO2, venting, flaring, methane losses, energy used transporting gas.

Climate Analytics (@ca_latest) 's Twitter Profile Photo

They underestimated the GHG intensity for liquefying gas into LNG by abt 60%, assuming an intensity of 0.21 tCO2e/tLNG. This is well below the lowest-intensity plant (~0.25) - in north Norway. Cold temps drive down GHG intensity. It's 35 degrees warmer in Darwin than Norway

Climate Analytics (@ca_latest) 's Twitter Profile Photo

The Beetaloo fracking project and LNG plant could produce annual domestic lifecycle carbon dioxide emissions equal to up to 13% of Australia's total 2021 emissions. It would generate more emissions than the 2030 reduction goal under the new Safeguard Mechanism regulations.

Emisssions from Betaloo fracking and the Tamboran LNG plant would wipe out the benefits of moving Australia’s car fleet to electric by the mid 2030s three times over. Car emissions were 3.3% of national emissions in 2021

In another major credibility hit to Dutton’s nuclear fantasy, the worlds most advanced Small Modular Reactor (SMR) project at the U.S. Dept of Energy’s National Laboratory in Idaho has been shut down due to cost over runs. Australia’s future is renewable not radioactive!
