I read this after reading Rachel Glennerster's interesting take on the need for big simple aid projects. From the 2 DFID Chief Econs I learned that aid projects could be techically better if simpler (RG), but only if big & simple aligns with political incentives (SD).

Maybe DFID had some decent brain trust and wasn’t worth abolishing or its funding wings cut off…
