Had an awesome time at my first @2021Gsnz conference featuring many great talks & posters and made new connectios! Thanks for the picture and co-chairing the interesting "Marine geological processes" session, @hillman_jess. #GSNZ2022 #geophysics #Python

In 2019 I had the opportunity to join voyage PS118 to #Antarctica on RV #Polarstern (happy 40th birthday!). Next week, I'm about to deploy on RVIB #NathanielBPalmer again heading down south to the #RossSea! We tried our Polar Gear today - really looking forward to the voyage!

Found an old map of #ibcso v1 in the hydroacustic lab of RVIB #NathanielBPalmer - it will be replaced with v2 soon I hope! Meanwhile we aim to #mapthegaps for IBCSO and Seabed 2030 on our way down to the #RossSea

Currently transiting to the #RossSea while trying to avoid a storm heading east just south of us. The sea has been rough lately but we could finally activate the #Kongsberg #multibeam echosounder after leaving NZ's EEZ and are recording (noisy) data!

This paper lays out a "scientific case" for not using rainbow or red-green diverging color schemes to convey information Check it out: "The misuse of colour in science communication" rdcu.be/c3DZR Perhaps required reading for anyone presenting scientific info?

Back in NZ after the NBP2301 voyage in the #RossSea and short visit of #McMurdo station. Acquired >2000 km seismic data before breaking some ice in McMurdo Sound. Four years after my last visit, #Antarctica was once again stunning! Even visited the Kiwi #ScottBase on my last day

My explainer is now online (free). Many thanks to a sleep-starved Ben Noll for helping me deconstruct the last 24 hours, and to @CubaRaglanGuy for wrapping climate change context around this. Stay strong Auckland nzherald.co.nz/nz/explained-w…

🧵I think this might end up being the most important story of my career. For the sake of the planet, I hope so. The upshot: nearly limitless, renewable stores of clean-burning hydrogen fuel might be sitting underground, right under our noses. 1/ science.org/content/articl…

This morning I, along with ~30 fellow senior polar scientists, sent an open letter to U.S. National Science Foundation advocating for reform to our Antarctic physical qualifying (PQ) process. At best, it is inefficient and frustrating. At worst, it is discriminatory. 1/4

Polarstern spent 4 days in Eltanin Bay conducting a geological survey and selecting core sites. This area is largely unmapped and therefore a great chance to collect new hi-res bathymetric data! A major interest is to understand the geomorphic structures created by the ice flow.
