This is good cause! Gordon Adams is 90 years old and has been ringing church bells for over 80 years, 65 of these at St Marys Church, Haverhill, Suffolk. He is walking to raise £5,000 for the bells there. See more here justgiving.com/crowdfunding/g…

By the way, people who are interested in the west Norfolk "rescue house" I've been going on about recently might like to know that there's an account for it on Instagram — @white_hall_norfolk

Tea time! I bought these cups, saucers and slop bowl for £20 at a local jumble sale. They're unmarked, crudely made, rather stained and extremely scruffy. I absolutely love them — what tales of whispered confidences, minor sadnesses and social triumphs they could probably tell!

Perfect Sunday morning reading. Like its predecessor, Ronald Hutton’s new Cromwell book is a masterpiece of evocative writing, often surprising insights, trenchant opinions and a magnificently encyclopaedic grasp of the sources.

The rain doesn't help, but Burslem is a sad place. It's the oldest of Stoke-on-Trent's six towns, but while Hanley, the city's centre, has the air of a moderately prosperous market town, Burslem feels at a tipping edge. I've rarely come across such a concentration of splendid
