Our brilliant colleague and friend Evan Gershkovich was arrested 413 days ago in Russia for simply doing his job. Every day he spends in prison is an outrageous injustice and an assault on freedom of the press

I know, little Spoon, that new cat has a very pretty cushion, but on the other hand it’s only a two dimensional cat and it lives in a picture frame, so it all nets out, don’t look at me like that, little Spoon

Creature of East Anglia that I am, Oxford always seems marvellously exotic and strange to me. Here are a few photos from yesterday, when it looked particularly delightful: sunshine falling on golden stone, a degree ceremony underway, green lawns and a soft light all its own

Just back from watching a marsh harrier build her nest on Blakeney's freshwater marsh this morning — no photos as I didn't think to bring a proper camera. Here, at least, is a nice dunnock whom I met on the way back — he had quite a lot to say for himself.

This is appalling. I hope that whoever did this awful thing has the good sense to return these irreplaceable items, or at least to leave them somewhere safe where they can be recovered.

Disappointing, if not surprising. For those who don't know, our village is home to many elderly people, has poor transport links to the nearest medical facilities, and has a bad habit of turning literally anything into an opportunity to build an overpriced, unattractive new house

A lovely meditation and a reminder of why old churches and churchyards matter:

'On reflection, I think that autumn visit to Old White Marsh in 2014 was, for me, the beginning of a long process of turning away from many years of publicly-professed atheism'.

After all those blue skies, today we have a sea fret — always a reminder, to those who live on the landward side of the village, of that whole other world of maritime hazards and possibilities that lies directly to the north of us
