Genuinely thrilled that my sometime North Norfolk neighbour, ceramicist Emma Bridgewater, is being made a dame in the King's birthday honours list. Emma's a remarkable businesswoman who has done so much to keep the Stoke potteries up and running — as well as a lovely person.

Lovely atmosphere on the Mall at the end of the King's Birthday Parade today — always such treat to be able to be there in real life!

We had a minor family health emergency yesterday evening - now, thankfully, largely resolved - but when I was at my most anxious, my little cat Spoon jumped onto the sofa and sat looking at me like this. Cats just know, don’t they? You’re a very good cat, little Spoon.

Even in its modern, short-stalked version, this is such a beautiful, graceful crop — awakening a strangely primal sense of wellbeing as we admire it, waiting out these last few golden days before harvest begins

Four roses, for anyone who, like me, finds them cheering: R. American Pillar (1862), R. The Garland (1835), R. Gallica officinalis (introduced to England in medieval times), R. New Dawn (1930)

The long days and short nights of midsummer mean that my hens only go into their house c 9.45 pm, but then are more than ready to come out again for their breakfast at 4.45 am — they can nap in shady bits of the garden during the day, unlike the rest of us!

You have to zoom into the centre of this image to see it, but I'm impressed by the sheer folk horror weirdness of the scarecrow my neighbour has set up at the far side of his field. Well, I assume it's a scarecrow .... 😱
