A1 Our new project illuminatingshadows.org shares stories to which are students can relate! It takes a look at Black men and women who've shaped Fort Monroe and whose stories have been neglected. Students particularly connect to the stories of other young people! #sschat

A2 Fort Monroe has an extensive archive for history local to Hampton, Virginia! But we encourage reaching out to so many local repositories including universities, public libraries, churches, and local nonprofits! #sschat

A3 We think encouraging them to write about what they're interested in is the best way to engage! Getting them started with primary source research and how they can relate and become inspired by local stories is a great first start! History isn't so distant! #sschat

A4 Many cultures and people have a robust oral tradition where stories of their ancestry have been passed down through the generations and can't be found elsewhere! These are an incredible resource! Oral histories bring so much emotion and information to the table! #sschat

A5 What better way to develop your own sense of identity than to understand where and who you came from? Knowing your ancestry can help you understand where you're going! illuminatingshadows.org will help those whose ancestry is harder to trace due to systemic racism. #sschat

A6 There are so many excellent digital history resources, but our new favorite is illuminatingshadows.org. The project aims to share the stories of Black people who have contributed to Fort Monroe's history, 1619 to the present, with community archives and oral histories! #sschat
