10 Favourite Recent Reads 1) The Triumph of Broken Promises - Fritz Bartel This incredible book reimagines the end of the cold war as a battle between two systems imposing 'economic discipline'. Definitely worth reading, many lessons on the political-economic divide.

Something I wondered about during our chat with Isabella M Weber. How much of Wolfgang Schäuble’s own devotion to euro area debt rules was informed by his own handling of/involvement with German reunification, and the role of external debt in the collapse of the Eastern Bloc?

Not a defender (or critic, since I'm unbiased) of euro fiscal rules But, Fritz Bartel is convincing in his book, laying out how Soviet satellite states were done in (partly) by huge debts to Western banks. Could see how someone like Schäuble might view this as existential.

after the oil crisis of the 1970s, eastern bloc countries started borrowing so heavily on the emerging eurocurrency markets that they were the cover star of the (capitalist) financial press

On the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, I'm reminded of the nugget in Fritz Bartel great book about how the IMF (indirectly) did it . . .

My history of Belgian neoliberalism has been translated for Jacobin. As an ideology, neoliberalism wasn't influential in Belgium. But with Fritz Bartel 's book in hand, an interesting history of economic disciplining is revealed. jacobin.com/2024/12/belgiu…

Having a really hard time staying focused on a re-read of Fritz Bartel's The Triumph of Broken Promises this morning. But, wow, his account of Gorbachev's throwing off of the burden of Soviet Empire has some strange, strange resonances right now!
