Something I wondered about during our chat with Isabella M Weber. How much of Wolfgang Schäuble’s own devotion to euro area debt rules was informed by his own handling of/involvement with German reunification, and the role of external debt in the collapse of the Eastern Bloc?
Not a defender (or critic, since I'm unbiased) of euro fiscal rules But, Fritz Bartel is convincing in his book, laying out how Soviet satellite states were done in (partly) by huge debts to Western banks. Could see how someone like Schäuble might view this as existential.
