#OnThisDay September 14, 1976: The blanket protest began when Irish Republican prisoner Kieran Nugent refused to wear a prison uniform, demanding that Irish revolutionary prisoners be recognized and treated as political prisoners as they had before.

#OnThisDay September 14, 1891: John Adams Hyman died. Born in 1840 in slavery, after the Civil War during Reconstruction Hyman became a US Congressman from North Carolina from 1875 to 1877. He was the first African American to represent the state in the House of Representatives.

#OnThisDay September 15, 1963: The 16th Street Baptist Church bombing. Four children were killed at an African-American church, known as a center for activism, in Birmingham, Alabama when members of the Ku Klux Klan bombed the church.

#OnThisDay September 16, 1982: The Sabra and Shatila massacre, the slaughter of more than 3,000 civilians by a Lebanese militia in the Sabra and Shatila Palestinian refugee camps in Beirut. The UN declared Israel responsible for the violence.

#OnThisDay September 18, 1980: Cuban cosmonaut Arnaldo Tamayo Méndez, with Soviet Yuri Romanenko, was launched into space aboard Soyuz 38. They orbited the Earth 124 times. Méndez was the first Cuban in space.
