If far right politicians are voted into the European Parliament tonight, it’ll be in large part because they presented a clear origin story about why things are getting worse. If we progressives want to win, we need give our own. Here’s an example:

The Danish left bucked Europe’s shift right. Turns out that trying to out-do the far right by blaming immigrants for problems a wealthy few are creating, & then worsening inequality with kickbacks to the 1% – as the centrists did – is a losing strategy. Here’s what we learned: 🧵

Going forward, the Danish left will need to deepen this trust – through organizing, messaging that mobilizes our progressive choir & moves people beyond it, & championing Green New Deal politics that center the lives of working people across our races, backgrounds, & genders. 6/

Right now, the climate space is filled with “harms and horrors” talk about how bad it’ll be and what to give up – not what we have to gain. We also talk in academic language about problems and solutions, while not naming those responsible or making meaning for people’s lives. 7/

We have proof now from Finland that the approach used to win numerous campaigns in the USA, Switzerland, & Australia — grounding in our progressive values and naming our opponents’ divide & conquer strategy — is a winning one. Huge opportunity for the Danish left to lean into.
