Why would lawmakers listen to librarians about what their bills will do to libraries, though? 🤷‍♂️

Two major newspapers just published a summer reading guide comprised mostly of books that don’t exist. AI is the culprit — but this episode also spotlights some unfortunate current realities about newspapers. Learn more in my latest for Book and Film Globe. bookandfilmglobe.com/fiction/these-…

#txlege House lobby brimming with parents, kids and librarians reading to protest SB 13, which is set for a vote today. Bill would add public review period for all new school library purchases and require school board approval of each + ban “sexually explicit” books

SB 13 and other book-banning efforts are not about protecting children, they're about control. We won’t stay quiet while lawmakers try to erase LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC voices from our schools. #txlege

Lawmakers, Texans do not want SB13, and we will not forgive you if you continue to damage our schools and impoverish our children’s education. Pay attention to the message from this month’s elections, and let our children read.

Correction: SB 13 was debated on 2nd reading tonight and was then passed to 3rd reading. It will (presumably) be heard again in the House tomorrow. If it passes on 3rd reading, THEN it can go back to the Senate #txlege

Grateful to the families and students who came to the Capitol today to stand up for access to books in our public libraries. 📚 #TxLege #SB13

Tx House passed school library advisory bill SB13 tho spirited defense of freedom to read by Erin Zwiener James Talarico Gina Hinojosa, Vernon Jones, Jessica Gonzales, Mihaela Plesa, Jolanda Jones, Jon Rosenthal and more. Senate approval ahead but constitutional challenges loom.

SB13 has ridiculously vague definitions and ones that interfere with high school content. We are dismayed to see that legislators can’t design a bill that has practicable definitions.

Water leaking through the House windows after a wave of the thunderstorm rolled over the Capitol. Lights flickering in the chamber. #txlege

Breaking- HB3225 which would have set age restrictions at public libraries failed to pass the Senate deadline tonight. We are glad to know that Texas public libraries can continue serving patrons and allowing families to make their own choices.
