In my work on baselines in the law of the sea, I'm constantly referring to low-water, low-tide elevations, high tide... But I confess I didn't really understand why tides go in and out until this: abc.net.au/kidslisten/pro…. Thank you @DrAnaVC! Informative for all ages!

Indeed, a joyous time was had writing about the joy of our radical-traditional, gap-minding, venn-diagram-enacting methods in international law! Thanks @camillejgoodman, and to Danish Sheikh, @leader_kate, Illan rua Wall & other contributors at criticallegalthinking.com for this carnival!

And part 2 of today’s treat (on the occasion of finishing a draft of a difficult thesis chapter 😩)… an afternoon in a golden armchair with this. And who knew that the ceiling of the reading room National Library of Australia was so cool?

Will sea-level rise destabilise the legal status of islands, causing a loss or reduction of their maritime zones? In this blog post, I draw on State practice to argue that if islands become uninhabitable, loss of 'island' status is not a fait accompli.

Great to see this engagement on legal stability and maritime zones, and a renewed focus on the interpretation of UNCLOS for addressing questions of sea-level rise.

It's not often the ICJ is asked for a ruling on the consistency of baselines with international law. How did it respond? We discuss this and other questions, with a focus on the ICJ's approach to custom. Thanks @camillejgoodman, Natalie Klein and Don Rothwell for a great collab.

A great piece showcasing important research by Tommy Fellowes and USYD MSI co-authors on coral islands. A pleasure to chat further with Graham Readfearn on what’s happening at the ILC and in State practice relating to sea-level rise and maritime zones.
