I will be speaking at Hay on 1 June but I have signed this letter asking for Baillie Gifford and other companies to divest from fossil fuels and from the companies that profit from Israel's ongoing assault on Palestine and the Palestinian people.

I'm speaking at Hay but I've signed Fossil Free Books letter. I want to call on all arts organisation to divest not just from Baillie Gifford but from every company who funds genocide, war, climate devastation and mass disablement with one hand, the arts the other. Some reading:

i'm withdrawing from appearances at Hay & Edinburgh Book Festivals this summer - solidarity to the many fellow authors & book workers doing the same. Our industry shouldn't be used to garner prestige by companies that profit from fossil fuels or the ongoing assault on Palestine.

For books to change the world, they must have a voice. We must divest and rebuild a publishing industry free from fossil fuels, genocide and colonial violence. It starts with speaking up, and you can add your name to ours Fossil Free Books.

They invest in companies linked to Israel's defence, tech and cybersecurity industries

If the arts stand for anything then it's equity and justice for those on the margins. If they don't then they are a tool of cultural hegemony, supporting fossil fuel exploitation, genocide and colonial violence.
