I can’t recall a more controversial canid. Cujo, maybe? Not everyone is a fan of Scrappy Doo or Spuds MacKenzie. Should their creation be dubbed Aenocyon lupus? Canis dirus (heh, fullish circle)? I dub thee “ire wolf”! Pic modified from the May 12, 2025 Time Magazine cover.

Opening night at the new Dinosaurs of the Hell Creek Museum was a blast! Thank you, Bill Stein, for the invite. Such a neat museum! Amazing casts, wonderful fossils, fantastic conversation, all capped by Clayton Phipps sharing his Dueling Dinosaurs experience. #FossilCrates

Dueling Dinosaurs exquisite sculpt made by Katie Busch of CK Preparations. Clayton Phipps, Peter Larsen, and more presented at Bill Stein’s sweet grand opening of the Dinosaurs of the Hell Creek Museum in Belle Fourche, SD. New taxon? #Stygivenator? #Nanotyrannus? #FossilCrates

One of the best parts about paleontology is the wildlife one sees while traveling to and from museums and fossil localities. This #Vulpes vulpes near Vail, Colorado led me to ponder smaller-sized Mesozoic predators. Where are the four-legged dinosaur carnivores? #FossilCrates

#Quetzalcoatlus animatronic at the Dinosaurs of the Hell Creek Museum in Belle Fourche, South Dakota. These mechanical contraptions have come a long way from my early 90s encounters, now with cooler sounds and motions. Kids adore them (as do many adults ;-)). #FossilCrates

Fukui Dinosaurs! A #Suchomimus next to a #Tyrannosaurus, with a #Spinosaurus skull. #Struthiomimus and #Mononykus dart about. #Heyuannia is an #oviraptor I wasn’t familiar with. #Brachiosaurus dominates the skyline, sending #theropods the other way :-). #FossilCrates

The Late #Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway of Kansas was terrifying. As if giant #mosasaurs, #plesiosaurs (were #elasmosaurs actually terrifying ;-)), #pliosaurs (they were terrifying), and 20’ bony fish like #Xiphactinus weren’t enough, a ~30’ shark was there! #FossilCrates

#Brachylophosaurus original “mummy” on display at the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Center 福井県立恐竜博物館 I saw a cast at the Great Plains Dinosaur Museum in Malta, Montana, near where twas found, but it didn’t prepare me for seeing the original specimen. Amazing! #FossilCrates

3D Revolution This stunning 2D #Cimolichthys fossil was made even more amazing by the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center team that scanned it, digitally restored it, then printed it at stunning fidelity. Their work is research quality and stunning to behold. #FossilCrates

Dinosaur Day Origins revealed! Joe Wos confirmed my hypothesis for how Dinosaur Day began was correct; it was purely accidental! You can read his note on my blog here: fossilcrates.com/blogs/news/din… Perhaps the only “holiday” created via a file name quirk! #DinosaurDay #FossilCrates

Roll Tide! These two Alabama “Bloat and Floats” are some of the most important #dinosaurs ever found in Appalachia. #Appalachiosaurus the tyrannosauroid and #Eotrachodon the hadrosauroid. My blog details Appa’s research history: fossilcrates.com/blogs/news/app… Alabama Crimson Tide #FossilCrates

Nicole! #Torosaurus = “perforated lizard” thanks to two frill perforations and nothing to do with being bull-like. That is me peering through the nostril. Did it have fleshy sacs like hooded seals? Why so big? Cast at the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center. #FossilCrates

A cabin made of bones in Wyoming. Tis near Bone Cabin Quarry, but the latter took its locality name from something else entirely. It was fun identifying bone bits with my zoom lens. I wish I had brought my Geiger counter :-). Sauropod hunting continues! :-) #FossilCrates
