On August 28, 1969, Jose Jimenez was fighting in Vietnam when his company came under attack. Jimenez charged forward, destroying several enemy positions. When he was within 10 ft. of the enemy, he was mortally wounded. He was awarded a posthumous MOH. f3.social/6y4t

Confederate papers recorded the sinking of the H.L. Hunley sub on this day in 1863. The sub sank while moored by lines attached to the steamer Etiwan. When the steamer moved away from the dock, the Hunley turned on its side and filled with water killing 5: f3.social/6y4u

The Kennedy brothers (John F. and Joseph P.) served in the US Navy during WWII. Joseph was killed in action when his plane exploded over the English Channel during a secret mission in 1944. His remains were never recovered. See his Memorial here: f3.social/6y4v

Sgt. Lawrence D. Peters was fighting in Vietnam when, on Sept 4, 1967, his squad became pinned down. Peters stood erect in the open, directing fire. He was wounded several times and eventually succumbed. Peters was awarded a posthumous MOH: f3.social/6y50

Michael Buckley became the first American POW of WWII when he was captured near Tobruk in November 1941 - about 2 weeks before Pearl Harbor. He was in Egypt as a US military observer to British forces when captured. He was freed during a prisoner exchange in May 1942.

Marine Lt. Col. William Rankin survived a 47,000-foot parachute jump in 1959. Rankin (pictured here in the Florence Morning News) was traveling 500 mph when he lost engine power over NC. He ejected the F8U Crusader, suffering frostbite and a broken, hand but made it down safely.

Pfc. Abeslin Chavez served in the 158th Infantry Regiment (known as the Bushmasters). The 158th was mostly Mexican Americans and Native Americans from AZ. Gen. McArthur said of the 158th, "No greater fighting combat team has ever been deployed for battle." f3.social/6y5j
