JNIM confirms in a communiqué the release of Soumaila Cissé against 206 JNIM members (no mention of Sophie Petronin). JNIM also calls for more of such actions as the benefits are greater than many smaller operations.

Finally, what we’ve all been waiting for: the first official confirmation of the liberation of opposition leader Soumaila Cissé and French humanitarian Sophie Petronin. They should be welcomed in Bamako very soon!

Personal news: I am happy to announce that I have joined DCAF HQ, more precisely DCAF Sub-Saharan Africa, as Sahel Regional Analyst. I am relocating to Bamako for this new role. Yes, I know... what a time to work on SSR in Mali! Please feel free to reach out.

First of all, it is not for France to decide if a dialogue with jihadist groups is possible. Second, contrary to what Le Drian said, "things are NOT that simple". Third, how about France starts listening and understanding what Malians want instead of ignoring it?

After a year of training, British troops have (finally!) made it to Mali. They’ll spend 3 years with MINUSMA in Gao, conducting patrols to gather intelligence.

Yesss! Download Bandcamp and go listen to « Music from Saharan WhatsApp ». This month it’s Bounaly’s EP, and it’s really worth it.

Coming out of my twitter break for some self-promotion. I wrote my first paper with DCAF Sub-Saharan Africa on what SSR will look like during the transition in Mali. You can find it here dcaf.ch/assessing-ssr-… in both English and French.

Thank you ISPI for bringing great minds together and publishing this special issue on the Sahel. Really worth reading (and I don't say that because I am one of the author).

For 100 days, Raouf Farrah has been detained in #Algeria. He is an amazing father and husband, an extremely talented researcher, and a man with a drive to make the world a better place. He shows the best of what Algeria and Algerians offer the world.
