Why would the Conservatives want local authorities to remain close to bankruptcy? Well, 1. It forces them to sell off (privatise) land and buildings. 2. It leaves them without the legal funds and administrative capacity to fight predatory developers and other favoured interests.

"Anglian Water to tackle sewage spills with £50m investment." Would this be a good time to remind you all that Steve Barclay SoS for Defra UK is married to Karen Barclay head of major infrastructure planning at Anglian Water? 🤔 bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan…

Over recent weeks Southern Water has being dumping copious amounts of sewage into the River Test. Next Monday Hampshire River Keepers Association will be protesting outside SW's Fullerton sewage dumping plant. If you're in the area do pop along and good luck to you all. 👋👋👋

Shift in Water companies position today. Now accepting there’s a problem. Admitting they’ve caused it via inadequate infrastructure. Pushing for more investment so they can fix it. So they can put bills up. Feargal Sharkey explains why that’s cobblers.

From the Isle of Portland before the weather turned shit: Marchesinia mackaii, Encalypta vulgaris and Pseudocrossidium revolutum in its natural environment, with some cheery lil leaf x-sections because that’s what you have to do when you find it otherwise you’re a crap bryologist

Sunak’s government has almost destroyed Natural England – just for doing its job. A shocking catalogue of Tory attacks on the watchdog set up to protect nature. It needs its budgets & its independence back. Spot on from ⁦Guy Shrubsole⁩ 👇 theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Hotel botany - this pondweed, hoiked from the river at Ross-on-Wye, matches book descriptions of Potamogeton gramineus (without floating leaves). It doesn’t look much like the specimen I have at home but nothing else fits. Or does it?

Dear bryologists - I’m stumped by this from a river cliff on the Wye. Most similar to Syntrichia latifolia - red in KOH/scattered gemmae/somewhat silt-encrusted. But lvs were only 0.9 mm at longest, and had an excurrent nerve and some teeth at apex. Any ideas BBSBryology ?

It’s hard to imagine a more shameful indictment of our sewage crisis than what I witnessed on the River Avon this afternoon. A flock of swans & ducks feeding & cavorting in a plume of raw sewage, just a few hundred metres from the centre of the genteel City of Bath. This huge

Scytinium pulvinatum maybe? On a dying Crab Apple I saved because of its rich epiphyte flora (for a Crab Apple tree in the Home Counties) #lichen

Proof that a change is better than a rest! Although my poor back would disagree after a day spent stumbling over Molinia tussocks, balancing on Schwingmoor and falling into bog pools

UK Government promised voters they would “protect nature” and “ensure…new towns and housebuilding include nature at their heart”. So why are new planning changes weakening environmental protections for developments? 😕🧵 (1/5)
