NEW: Florida lawmakers would have to increase the state’s general sales tax rate to 12% — the nation’s highest — if they were to eliminate property taxes & replace them w/higher consumption taxes, as per the latest report by FPI's Esteban Santis, PhD. floridapolicy.org/posts/a-risky-…

I find it interesting that the Florida Chamber, a front group of corporations like Publix, FPL, and Big Sugar, is in support of this bill… What is the interest of big business groups in making our ballot initiative process more inaccessible? Publix Florida Chamber Florida Crystals

🚨HB 541 just got exposed for what it really is: a blatant attempt to gut Florida’s minimum wage. The sponsor, Rep. Chamberlin, admitted this “intern” loophole could apply to ANY worker, including a Walmart stocking clerk. This isn’t an “opt-in.” It’s a wage theft free-for-all.

HB 541 passed along party lines, except for Republican @SusanLValdes, who stood with Florida workers and voted NO. Thank you, Rep. Valdes, for doing the right thing and rejecting this attack on fair wages.

Combined reporting would close loopholes that let giant corporations shift profits to tax havens and dodge billions in taxes. In Florida, we are losing up to $2.4 billion every single year! Let’s make them pay what they owe. Thanks Rep. Anna V. Eskamani, PhD 🔨 for joining us and supporting.

Just 2 days before a student opened fire on FSU’s campus, allegedly using their parents’ gun, former Senate President Kathleen Passidomo told a Parkland survivor she didn’t agree with their plea to stop a weapons sales tax holiday and implement a tax break on gun safety storage.

For your radar: The Fla. Legislature has passed 18 bills so far this session that is scheduled to end on May 2 - That's 11 days from now. Nearly 2,000 bills were filed this year. Lawmakers have 8 days to wrap up all work on a budget so they can end on time

There is someone who appears at both the beginning and the end of the still-unfolding “Hope Florida” scandal: James Uthmeier, who was Ron DeSantis’ chief of staff during the entire sequence of events (and who is now Florida's attorney general.) 🧵...

Florida lawmakers denied access to detention camp in the Everglades because of “safety concerns”, but those safety concerns do not extend to those detained there or the president of the United States who got a tour yesterday. There is also no running water or plumbing.

Just left Florida’s Everglades immigrant detention camp. 750 humans in cages. Not allowed to speak to detainees. No walk through of occupied areas. Immigrants without criminal records. $450 MILLION in no-bid contracts for GOP donors. I am ashamed. Shut this facility down now.

More ambulances leaving Alligator Alcatraz. One at 10:30 am today and the other at 6:30 pm. Another at 11:57 pm last night, 6:10 pm on July 31st. Florida Department of Emergency Management, which operates the site, refuses to confirm hospitalizations but they are happening.
