A happy coincidence to be out doing surveys on this beautiful day that celebrates the big blue 🌊 Happy #WorldOceansDay! Here’s to the temperate ocean that’s adopted the tropical girl.

It takes a village! 2 years of diving and 400 bags of seaweed later, it’s a wrap for my PhD field data collection. A huge thank you to my amazing lab group and staff and students Marine Science Otago who helped above and beyond. Team work truly does make the dream work!

As an international PhD candidate, one of the biggest hurdles due to the pandemic has been boarder closures. Taking a deferment (pressing pause) on my PhD to finally come home to Fiji and be surrounded by family, friends and all things tropical, has been a game changer.

Books for children of the ocean! #TeamFiji here is something to read to your children, niece, nephew or by yourself. It’s all free and so so relatable.

#phycologyfriday ft the green gold of Fijis coastal waters- Nama, aka Caulerpa spp of seaweed. Widely loved and consumed in the South Pacific. Here we gather some on the island of Oneata, Lau group, for a tasty lunch salad.

I spy with my little eyes some more Nama! This is the best of both worlds; Nama beds (caulerpa spp) dancing along with seagrass (Vutia), at Oneata island, Lau group, Fiji.

Nothing quite like the alien feeling of seaweed underneath a kids feet to make them rush out of the water. When I told my niece it’s just a harmless seaweed called Sargassum, the response was an unimpressed -“what you study seaweed🙄!!’ 😂 Happy #phycology Friday.
