Judas Priest's Rob Halford is celebrating 40 years of sobriety. "To those of you who may be considering that first step onto the journey with me, I hope that my own journey proves that recovery is possible. Hope is real, and each day at a time is a chance to begin again."

the first photograph ever taken of a star (vega, in 1850) is very aesthetic. captures the 1800s vibe on speculation about the heavens and other worlds perfectly:

This is me in my first Toronto apt with my first guitar. I lived in a rooming house and the rent was $135 a month. I was so young and dumb then that I didn't know that you shouldn't live in a rooming house with 8 people and share one bathroom. But look at how young and dumb I am!

The UAE has cut funding for students who want to study in the UK. It is worried they will be radicalised on our campuses. Let me say that again. An Arab state will not send its kids to the UK because it is worried we will turn them into Islamic terrorists. Let that sink in.

No snow in the valley today, but as I was walking home earlier, I was struck by the eerie simplicity of this scene. Strange how some places just touch the soul.

I’ve received some questions about what we mean, in our National Security Strategy, when we invoke “civilizational” concerns. So I’m tweeting a relevant news item.
