As I said in 1988, a political system that is not willing to negotiate with the organized forces of society can only blame itself when it’s shot at. The responsibility will lie not with those who shoot but with those who refused the dialogue with people of peaceful intentions.

In 1988 a government newspaper stated that Fidesz was an illegal organization. We sued them and demanded rectification. The court decided against Fidesz by violating the law. I had only one message to those in the court who acted as an instrument of the government: kiss my *ss.

On 15 March 2007, in my speech on the occasion of our national holiday, I I called on the Hungarian nation not to tolerate tyranny and fight against it like it did in 1848 and 1849. “The nation condemns itself if it acquits its criminal leaders.”

In 2006, when I was in opposition, I warned Hungarians that Hungary might soon resemble Putin’s Russia if doctors can’t tell their professional opinions out of fear of the political regime.

As I said in 2008, the Hungarian government cannot simply sign a contract with Russia which it then makes secret for 10 years. At that time my position was that Prime Minister Gyurcsány betrayed Hungary and served Russian power aspirations.

In 2007, together with the representatives of Fidesz, I removed the barriers that the police put around Kossuth square where the Parliament Building stands. It was against the constitution that the government tried to restrict the freedom of assembly of Hungarian citizens.

In this 1989 interview I talked about how my father used to beat me, how I had always had a schizophrenic tendency, and that I had been very active in the Young Communist League.

On 7 October 1998, I met President Clinton in Washington to discuss Hungary’s entry into NATO. The President expressed his excitement about Hungary’s youthful and progressive leadership, and I expressed the gratitude of our nation for his help in our admission to the Alliance.

Only a liberal government can be able to confront the increasingly widespread racism and xenophobia. All the radical right wing does is abusing national rhetoric while doing more harm with their policies than good to our fellow Hungarians living beyond Hungary’s borders.

On 23 October we remember the 🇭🇺 revolutionaries of 1956, who bravely fought against Soviet tyranny. I vowed to carry on their spirit and their ideals. I will continue to fight for democracy, and I plan to remain one of the strongest anti-Russian voices in European politics.
