“Wenceslas was perhaps the most beloved King who ever lived. He was a Prince of Peace. I think that to have lived so long ago, and ever since to have been a song on the lips of the world, just because he was gentle, is a wonderful thing to have happened.” ~A.A.Milne #Christmas

Wassailing wasn’t just singing. It was a winter blessing for orchards, where people toasted trees with cider and hung bits of bread for the robins. A good harvest began with a good song. #FolkloreThursday Art: Pauling Baynes

"The Snow Child", pub. 1978. Based on the old Russian folk tale of 'Snegurochka', a girl made of snow who appeared one day to a old childless couple #BookologyThursday The story's changed over the years; now she is said to be the Granddaughter of Father Frost #BookChatWeekly

Frost covered Ivy berries are for admiration rather than eating...but for birds they’re a winter lifeline ❄️🪶 Folklore, however, saw another side to Ivy and its tangled, twisting nature made it a symbol of love, protection & fidelity....and once upon a time a girl walking out

Today is the feast of the Christian martyr, St Lucy, a Catholic saint and patron of the blind. Legend says it was she who fed the Christians hiding in the dark Roman catacombs, wearing a garland of candles on her head to light her way in the darkness. 🖼️Sulamith Wülfing.
