Yesterday I got arrested whilst filming a Just Stop Oil supporter holding a banner on the pavement near the coronation route. I'm a filmmaker and had my @BECTU press accreditation visible around my neck. Police deemed this to be "conspiracy to commit a public nuisance".

So not only did Amartya Sen get a Nobel for pointing out "Hey famines don't actually come from natural food shortages, they're manmade!" but St John the Elder called it 2,000 years ago, stuck it in the main religious text for the West, and it's STILL news to most commentators

Sadly, University of Kent has announced plans to axe a number of smaller departments, including philosophy. We perform well on all measures, including student recruitment. But smaller subjects have less clout and are easiest to cut. Help us shout out our value to the uni! They need to hear

Had a great time yesterday co-presenting a joint paper with Elliot at the Uni of Birmingham's Philosophy of Religion Seminar Series. We presented our work on a demarcation model that helps distinguish sentences that express delusions from those that express religious beliefs.

Excellent read from Amia Srinivasan that has shfited my sceptical (perhaps, a little jaundiced) view of open letters. If We Say Yes lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v46/…

It has come – needlessly – to this. Oxford's senior administration calls the cops on its own students for sitting-in, arresting sixteen. A massively disproportionate response, and a sad day for Oxford.

Excellent workshop on Friday at BSMS Thanks to PeterWest-Oram.bsky.social & Arianne Shahvisi 🇵🇸 for arranging a wonderful series of talks (not least their own). And thanks to everyone for sitting through me hum-and-haw my way through the moral standing of mountains

On the blog today, Elliot Porter (Elliot) discusses the phenomenology of manic episodes, and how this affects the sense of urgency around one's practical reasons. imperfectcognitions.blogspot.com/2024/07/agency…

Watch this it’s fascinating - I asked James Timpson what he’d do about prisons and sentencing if he was in charge. He believes only a third of prisoners in jail should definitely be there. He’s now in charge of prisons (but not sentencing).

how do we manage the problem where, when typing out emails, that outlook interprets a random sample of keystrokes as hotkeys that delete other emails or wvr, rather than as entries to the email one is typing?
