Citing studies showing that vegetable oils have the potential to become rancid under specific conditions is not evidence that every food product containing these oils is rancid. That’d be like telling people to avoid apples because they can spoil under certain conditions. No.

Did you know there’s a group food additives used to make food taste more appealing so that people will eat more and purchase again? They are made up of many different chemicals, some that I can’t even pronounce AND some are even pesticides and neurotoxins. What are they? Spices

The most important reason to process food is to keep it safe to eat. Putting all processed foods in a single bucket defies good common sense. #ultraprocessed #processedfood #foodfirst #foodchoices #realfood #marketing #nutrientprofile #taste #foodsafety #RDchat

It takes courage to speak up, to voice your thoughts. With knowledge as your weapon, doing that will make you feel alive. Silence is consent, and by being neutral and not standing up for science you might be agreeing to irrationality and all that comes with it!

AA: does UPF help to inform dietary guidelines beyond existing systems? AA thinks more problematic, misleading than it is helpful due to vague definition, high risk of misclassification

American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (@ajcnutrition) 's Twitter Profile Photo

AA thinks counterproductive also because UPF demonizes health foods. Several nutrient dense UPFs exist and shouldn't be considered unhealthy. For example, beneficial additives in veg*n diets (meat alts) that would be labeled UPF.

American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (@ajcnutrition) 's Twitter Profile Photo

AA concludes: serious limitations of the vague definitions of UPF; poor replicability of the UPF; questiosn comparability of diets defined as UPF across cohorts; notes that UPF has not been rigorously developed/tested before rec to public; UPF needs to be revised.

New WHO statement doesn’t recommend the use of NNS (non-nutritive sweeteners) 😱 Let’s talk about the statement from the WHO, the multitude of things wrong with it, & the people misrepresenting it The level of hypocrisy from fitness influencers about this statement is hilarious

An organisation that benefits directly and indirectly from people being scared of processed foods attacks a government review about the safety of processed foods. The muddy finger of campaigners can be seen all over this statement.

Gunter Kuhnle (@ggkuhnle) 's Twitter Profile Photo

It is interesting that many people who demonise #UPF have a clear financial interest in doing so - either selling books, lifestyle advice or expensive foods. Perhaps it would be good if they would be as transparent about their interests as everyone else in the discussion.

Gunter Kuhnle (@ggkuhnle) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Scientists with financial interests are usually very well aware of them and declare them openly. One can deal with that. Ideological interests are much more dangerous as people do not realise they exist, they're not declared and cause much more harm
