If you found something of value in my Fansplaining article about life as a fan-journalist, you can also listen to my guest appearance on the Fansplaining podcast. Elizabeth Minkel and I commiserated about culture journalism & Flourish Klink kept us on track!
An excerpt from kayti burt's article for us this week, 'The Fan-Journalist Tightrope,' on the challenges of being a fannish pop-culture journalist—which are only heightened when you're covering topics like K-pop for U.S. outlets: fansplaining.com/articles/the-f…
In addition to publishing kayti burt, we also had the delight of having her on the podcast. (Which is mostly the two of us complaining about media/freelancing while Flourish Klink desperately tries to interject with things like, 'SO AFTER YOU GET A PITCH ACCEPTED WHAT HAPPENS?')
We just released episode 220, 'The Fan-Journalist,' a conversation with one particular fan-journalist—kayti burt!—about her recent article for us on the challenges of covering the things you love. Listen or read a full transcript: fansplaining.com/episodes/220-t…
Today we're thrilled to publish our newest article, by longtime pop culture journalist (and longertime fan) kayti burt! On the especially precarious position of fan-journalists in an already precarious industry: fansplaining.com/articles/the-f…
We just released episode 219, 'Tropefest Speedrun,' which has a big announcement: in May, Flourish Klink is leaving the podcast. 🥲 This ep builds on our 'Tropefest' series for Patrons, with 10 fic tropes/themes in an hour. Listen or read a full transcript: fansplaining.com/episodes/219-t…
I was so glad I got to talk this through with Flourish Klink, who has a ton of historical knowledge in this realm (threatened by Warner Bros. as a pre-teen!) and also brought up some really through-provoking ideas about fandom's attitudes toward $$$.
For my latest Atlas Obscura column, I wrote about fanbinding and the work of the Renegade Bindery! 🪡 Amongst other things, I was really struck by how much their open-ended, communal DIY nature reflects fanfiction itself: atlasobscura.com/articles/fanbi…
A few days ago I reported a v depressing story about bad actors selling bound fic for profit. Today, I have a far more joyful fanbinding story: my latest Atlas Obscura column is about the communal, DIY, firmly not-for-profit work of the Renegade Bindery: atlasobscura.com/articles/fanbi…
