If you feel like spending some time finding out more about forgotten women's stories, why not come to our joint exhibition with the Bar Convent - Two Houses, One Story: York's Forgotten Women ❤️

This portrait of Mary Magdalene was painted in the 16th century by Jan Matsys - who gained a reputation as a painter of sensuous female nudes.

In this portrait, Matsys has contemporised Mary Magdalene, depicting her in a manner sixteenth century viewers could relate to.

Here's the only example of husband-and-wife companion portraits in our collection - William and Frances Hardes.

Frances was painted in a domesticated setting, with fruit to suggest her fertility and flowers to suggest her beauty. This reflects the Georgian view on gender roles.

TOMORROW is the first day of our joint exhibition with the Bar Convent!

It will tell the forgotten stories of the Catholic women of York.

We've found an old Christmas card, a handwritten note from Joseph Grammar, and even a hand-written medieval illuminated manuscript that has been chopped up and used as binding 🫢
