The spill continues for weeks, and oil washes upon the shores. Local fishermen express concerns over how these spills threatens their livelihoods and environmental experts fear its affects the Al Hesweh Nature reserve and nearby bird sanctuary 4/x

We found out that the PEARL OF ATHENA was moved end of April 2022. Initially it was anchoring more east in the Port, but for reasons unknown the ship was towed towards the west. Could this have triggered a spill 2 months later? 5/x

This major incident follows two previous massive oil spills. Almost exactly a year ago, the abandoned oil tanker DIA-1, mooring at the Port of Aden sinks, leaving a 20km spill affecting the Port and coast around Aden for weeks 6/x

While in July 2019, another oil tanker anchoring north of the Oil Harbor starts to take water and releases oil for weeks, seen here on both :) (L) and Planet (R) high resolution imagery. 7/x

Turns out, there are many more ships rusting away in the Port of Aden, most of them still loaded with significant amount of fuel, turning them in ticking toxic time bombs. This overview of the current vessels and the oil spill gives a good impression of the risks waiting 8/x

The lack of proper monitoring and enforcement of environmental regulations can be seen on Planet satellite imagery as many anchoring tankers and visiting ships dump bilge water or waste water when entering the Port, in particular those visiting the Container Terminal 9/x

There are now still 11 ships, including oil tankers, still rusting away and leaking oil in the Port, and according to new information shared by the Yemeni journalist بسام القاضي, the CORAL tanker with 90 tons of oil on board is likely to be next 10/x

An important context here is that United Nations has been working for years to prevent a massive oil spill from the FSO SAFER, a decaying tanker on the west coast with 1.1 million barrels of oil on board, but failed to raise money for a rescue operation 11/x un.org/en/StopRedSeaS…
