Day 3 of making my own short animated film: I started blocking out some of the more complex sequences using fRigging Awesome Studios rigs, it's already been so helpful to begin visualizing the script in 3D.

Yo...has this option on the Maya rotate/scale tools to manipulate based on local pivots been there this whole time?! The hours WASTED!

Rigging isn't as hard as many think. It's not about memorizing 3000 steps to rig a human, or even 300 steps for 1 body part. It's about learning a bunch of very simple configurations, and how to plug them all together. Break it down to the smallest puzzle piece and focus on that.

Just a little flight cycle rig by fRigging Awesome Studios

I don't have a behind the scenes image from the movie, but when I worked in the cloth simulation dept on Big Hero 6, the quickest way to fix the character's skin from poking through the simulated cloth was to just shove it all inwards. Here's an example w/ my own character rig.

Speaking of Big Hero 6 anecdotes, that man running down the stairs is ME. They let us use the character creator to make extras, so of course I made myself. Then my animator coworker Joon Song took a video of me running down stairs and used it as reference. Now I'm immortalized.
