Remembering Stuart Lewis-Evans, born #OnThisDay in ’30, who raced 14 #F1 GPs in ’57 & ’58, finishing 3rd at Spa & Oporto in ’58, managed by Bernie Ecclestone. He died of burns sustained in a shunt at Ain-Diab later that year. Pic: Pescara, ’57, with an uber-cool Vanwall mechanic.

Remembering Franco Cortese, born #OnThisDay in 1903. #AnorakFact: he raced 156 times from ’27 to ’58, his first win coming in an Alfa in the ’34 #TargaAbruzzi, a 24-hour race at Pescara. Pic: en route to 9th at Nürburgring in ’38 in his own Scuderia Ambrosiana Maserati 6CM. (1/3)

#AnorakFact: in this Ferrari 125S, at Piacenza, in ’47, Franco Cortese became the first driver to race a Ferrari for Scuderia Ferrari. Enzo Ferrari had long been team manager at Alfa Romeo but this was the first time he’d run a car of his own construction in his own name. (2/3)

Remembering Theo Fitzau, born #OnThisDay 101 years ago, who drove just one GP, Nürburgring ’53 (pic), at the wheel of friend & fellow driver Helmut Niedermayr’s AFM-BMW. Fitzau DNF’d. Niedermayr had raced the same car to 9th place in the previous year’s #GermanGP.
