How about this! A teeny-tiny, second instar White-letter Hairstreak caterpillar. Bravely venturing out to find another Elm bud to devour, having a much needed rest on the way. One of three found this afternoon in Exmouth BC Devon Branch Butterfly Conservation 🦋

Any Larch trees in Exmouth? Wonderful pink flowering female cones, next to an old cone from a previous season (on a tree at Exeter Hospital).

Tree of the Month for March: mystery veteran Apple tree on the “Weasel Run”. Just 15m off the East Devon Way, within that Local Nature Reserve, next to the Duck Pond. No idea what variety - most probably self-seeded from an apple core thrown far from a steam train 100 years ago.

Tree of the Month, April '24, a big elm on Dinan Way - European White (Ulmus laevis) or American Elm? This tree was spotted 4 winters ago, but wrongly ID'ed as hornbeam. Local butterfly expert Max Anderson has been searching for elms and thought this was one - it is! More info on FB

Had a great time out last night looking for caterpillars and pupae of White-letter Hairstreaks and Purple Hairstreaks under UV with some fantastic folks from Exmouth Wildlife Group. Obligatory time for checking out some bats too! Sarah Butcher Exmouth Tree Project BC Devon Branch

In haste, Tree of the Month for May 2024: the Chusan or Chinese Windmill Palm (Trachycarpus fortunei) 🌴 Several good examples in Exmouth, the ones at the library have just finished flowering, but one in Manor Gardens is still attracting the bees (Imperial Rd border).

Tree of the Month, July 2024. Just when you thought you could identify an "English Oak"...🌳 Our two native oaks are the Common / Pedunculate Oak (Quercus robur) and the Sessile / Durmast Oak (Quercus petraea) and then there are hybrids. Help! More on FB: facebook.com/ExmouthTreePro…
