I had a fun couple of months at The Everett Herald. Sound Publishing just cut its staff by over half, so my re-entry into sports journalism was brief. Best of luck to everyone. Another sad day for journalism.

Herald ownership lets go half of newroom. Publisher tells his own paper “readers won’t notice” and then — takes the story down?! Egregious, insulting to everyone who lost their job yesterday and everyone left there who now has to work twice as hard. God, I’m so sorry guys.

We were able to repost an ~edited~ version of the story. It still includes this quote from our publisher Rudi Alcott, “Moving forward, operations are not going to change much. The readers won’t notice.” heraldnet.com/news/this-brea…

I wanted to take a little time to gather my thoughts before posting about the devastating layoffs that took place at The Herald yesterday, when more than half of what was left of the newsroom was lost. 1/

This is sad. The Snohomish Co. community has been blessed with amazing coverage of youth/HS sports over the decades. Here are some of my favorite pics of my boys I'll cherish forever because of the Herald's photographers.📷: Andy Bronson, @kdimages, Ryan Berry, Olivia Vanni.

It really can’t be said any better than this. Nick is an example of the best that local newsrooms have to offer. Covering sports in Snohomish County with four staffers was a massive challenge, but with only two it’s frankly impossible.

As a matter of record, Everett NewsGuild ✊ reporters and photographers are "asking readers to submit a letter to [email protected] sharing your support" in light of devastating layoffs in the Everett Herald newsroom.

🧵: After a horrible week it feels odd to acknowledge that today marks 6 years as a staff photographer at the Herald. I’d normally share favorite things I’ve worked on over the years but I’d like to take today to highlight the amazing journalists laid off this week that I’ve had

Thankful for Everett Herald prep sports reporters covering #WESCOBaseball this season. Tough news about layoffs of key reporters like Aaron Coe and Evan Wiederspohn. We need more local preps sports reporting, not less! A loss for student athletes across Wesco Athletics .

Union workers with Everett Herald went on strike today to voice their displeasure with half of their news staff being laid off. Sophia Gates spoke with me earlier in the afternoon.

Absolutely fucking love this photo. Shouts out to the Herald photo crew for all managing to avoid being in this pic, as photogs are wont to do.

Everett alumni (Everett Seagulls Boys Basketball) place second; skills contests, food trucks and vendors were also in full swing this weekend. Everett Herald had its own three-person crew: story by Taras McCurdie , videos by Evan Wiederspohn and photos by Annie Barker heraldnet.com/sports/recap-v…

As I wrote a long letter to The Herald's ownership a few weeks ago, I found myself also writing out my feelings about my former career. I loved journalism for so long; I'm pretty sure I would never go back, however. And I hate that. efetters-walp.wixsite.com/efetters-walp/…

Today's a hard day. Twelve of our members are working their final shift. We bargained tirelessly for a month, but Carpenter Media simply refused to spare any jobs. We were, however, able to negotiate optional buyouts, increased severance packages and raises for remaining staff.

And though many of us are departing today, Herald journalists — past, present and future — will continue to fight for a fair contract. We will never stop pursuing what's best for the Daily Herald, its staff and its readers.

Don't have much to add on the Herald layoffs other than this whole process made me deeply sad. Communities need people who care about it to cover its news well & this is a group of people who cared.

The once proud Herald newsroom is now me, a photoj, two grant funded positions (Health, Environment), two sports reporters, two news editors & a sports editor. That’s it. For a county of nearly a million people.
