THREAD: One reality of COVID is that students are frequently going to miss in-person class. Traditional teaching practices built on live lectures and fixed-pacing aren’t built to withstand that reality. They are too inflexible to consistently support absent students. 1/3

Instead, we need to leverage instructional models that aren’t so reliant on synchronous instruction. The purpose of class shouldn’t be to deliver vital information that is inaccessible to absent students. Class should primarily focus on 1-1 and small group discussion. 2/3

A solution is to run classrooms that are: 1. Blended: Live lectures are replaced with short videos/resources that live in a digital home base. 2. Self-Paced: Kids pick up where they left off so they can access content that is appropriately challenging, in-person or at home. 3/3

Please do not say that #AssistiveTechnology supports such as text to speech and speech to text can get overused. Would you ever tell a wheelchair user that they are overusing their wheelchair, or that I ‘m overusing my contact lenses or my dad overuses his hearing aids?

By removing letter-grades and percentages from the picture, we're also getting rid of rank-and-sort. We're saying goodbye to trophy culture. Instead, we're saying that we are a learning community. We pursue proficiency together because we are all developing learners. #BCed
