How many people go to church weekly?

Surveys say it's about 1 in 5 Americans.

Cell phone tracker data say it's actually closer to 1 in 20 Americans.

Fascinating new working paper!

I applaud that editor. I believe there is a bias in editorial decisions in econ journals in favor of papers that “look hard” to produce. Degree of difficulty should be used to judge gymnastics and figure skating, not scientific contributions.

What a great choice for UC Berkeley. Rich Lyons has a deep love and commitment to UC Berkeley .
I remember how he stopped to pick up rubbish, because the campus has to look perfect, in our walk and talk during my visit. Leading by example!

Michael Jensen died this week. His 1976 article with Meckling is the most cited corporate finance paper of all time - but also one of the most misunderstood and maligned. Here's what he actually wrote, and even stakeholder capitalists can learn from it. promarket.org/2021/05/09/sta…

Weak politicians make insane (easy) short term choices, which will hurt everyone in the long term. Somehow it can always get worse! Very sad for the Dutch system that will lose great (German and other EU/non-EU) students and academics.

What puzzles me about the social media debate is why our null hypothesis/prior should be that there is no effect.

These platforms are literally A/B tested to maximize user lock-in, addiction, and social comparison. This is pretty well known. 1/5

Another simple story is that bias and other barriers have left untapped talent on the table for better firms to hire.

Always nice to see a paper come out in print.

This paper is unusual in that it proved simpler than expected. We draw parallels between the economics of tax evasion and tax misperception, and provide what we hope is useful policy analysis for both.
