Perhaps it worked for him, but my advice would be to be authentic rather than strategic. Talk about interesting papers with people who share an interest in them. Don’t kiss up; often the most interesting people are the grad students!

Couldn't agree more. And editors must take care to avoid being coauthors as well (I admit to not always being perfect here). Finally, editors have a role in protecting authors against referees acting as coauthors. My favorite phrase: "I see it as the authors' prerogative to..."
