We were warned. The similarities between HIV damage and COVID damage have been known for a few years. Both deplete CD4 and CD8 immune cells. It took 7 years to fully realize HIV caused AIDS. Initially, HIV caused flu-like symptoms, which resolved.

The first study of its kind found children with Long COVID have a well distinct blood protein signature marked by increased ongoing general and endothelial inflammation, similar to adults. “A proteomic profile was able to identify Long COVID with an accuracy of 0.93.”

We could just shrug away ambient flu in the past, but we can't shrug away ambient C19: it suppresses the immune system far too much. You see this by how much more often people fall prey to other bacterial infections after a C19 infection compared to a flu infection:

New study in Nature finds no such thing as natural immunity to covid after the arrival of omicron. Pre-omicron, infection provided 80% protection against re-infection one year later. This falls to under 5% at one year with omicron
