Resident physician salaries rise only at the rate of inflation, completely untethered from any other market force. According to the AAMC, the median “stipend” for a PGY-1 resident is currently $65,100. (That’s ~$48,000 in 2012 dollars if you want to imagine it plotted below.)

It’s a turbulent job market with decreased private practices, increased locums jobs, and evolving staffing models. Some look for job stability and others like riding the spontaneous locums wave. I think ASA® does a great job of catering to both mindsets!

Do people really think the 200k cap on federal loans will force med schools to lower tuition? There’s no way. Students will have to take out more private loans. Better hope you or a family member have a good credit score.

This thread 🧵 makes some great points. However, also worth considering IMO is how fellowship training can help protect docs from nurse/PA replacement, and increase non-clinical/leadership opportunities - esp in times of market/reimbursement volatility.
