As shipping & exploration activities in the Arctic increase, so does the risk of oil spills. In 2013 under the auspices of the Council, Arctic States signed an agreement on marine oil spill pollution in the Arctic. Emergency Prevention, Preparedness and Response implements the agreement & operational guidelines.


As traffic in the Arctic increases, so does the risk for accidents. In 2011, Arctic States signed an agreement on search & rescue in the Arctic to improve cooperation & coordination in the case of incidents. Our Emergency Prevention, Preparedness and Response Working Group supports & implements the agreement.


The IMO's Arctic #HFO ban came into effect this summer. With new 🛳️ fuels coming on the market, how do they impact the Arctic? Radioactivity from both human activities & natural sources are a concern in the Arctic. At #Assembly 2024 AMAP & Emergency Prevention, Preparedness and Response spoke about radiation in the Arctic as well as increasing risks for incidents.
