Nearly 300 people attended a recent Ft Calhoun town hall meeting to hear a discussion on a proposed firearm training facility in Ft Calhoun. Since then, a petition drive has started that, if successful, would require a vote of the people before the city could go forward.

Organizers in Ft Calhoun submitted a petition seeking a special election on the topic of the Omaha Police Department wanting to lease space in Fort Calhoun for an outdoor gun range. They also have submitted paperwork to begin a recall effort of Ft Calhoun Mayor Mitch Robinson.

Fort Calhoun Mayor Mitch Robinson announced Tuesday that a special election to decide whether the City Council can proceed with discussion of a proposed Omaha Police Department gun range will be held by mail on May 13.

Organizers of a recall petition for Fort Calhoun Mayor Mitch Robinson have 30 days to gather signatures, which may trigger a second special election in the coming months for Fort Calhoun residents. Both are tied to plans for a proposed OPD gun range in Fort Calhoun.

The Blair City Council will be asked to confirm Mayor Mindy Rump’s appointment of Jeremy Kinsey to serve as the city’s new police chief at next Tuesday’s meeting. Kinsey, who currently serves as operations commander with the La Vista Police Department, was one of three finalists.
