Since the establishment of the UN Against Sexual Violence in Conflict mandate, our office has seen more strategic and structured engagement with the security and justice sectors, as part of a prevention strategy.

The development of a robust legislative framework in the Security Council has given the Office new tools to implement the mandate on the ground and begin to effect some changes in behaviour.

Since the establishment of our mandate, significant progress has been made, including a radical shift in paradigm and perspective.

The survivor-centered approach articulated in UNSCR 2467 demands that survivors’ voices be heeded in policy decisions, that they be provided with assistance, and that they be seen by their societies as the holders of rights that will, ultimately, be respected and enforced.

Recognizing the nexus between conflict, trafficking, and sexual violence in UNSCR 2331, the United Nations Security Council specifically condemned trafficking for the purposes of exploitation, prostitution or other forms of sexual exploitation in areas affected by armed conflicts.

#CRSV against men and boys has a long history and a high number of incidents, yet recognition of this phenomenon is fairly recent.

It was in 2013 that for the first time, UNSCR 2106 explicitly mentioned men and boys as victims of sexual violence in conflict.
