Here is a Home Fire Timeline from the Nonprofit HFSC that shows the start of a fire and the time needed to escape, which is about 3-4 minutes. Your first line of defense -working smoke alarms for early detection!

Home Fire Sprinklers give you, your family, roommates and friends (pets too!) time to escape a fire by quickly activating & reducing heat and smoke produced by the fire. Smoke Alarms give you early warning smoke is present, while Fire Sprinklers give you time to escape.

How to Fire Sprinklers Operate? Fire sprinklers activate by heat. Only the sprinklers that are exposed to the required heat level will operate. The fire sprinkler has a deflector which creates an umbrella-like spray pattern to extinguish a fire around the fire sprinkler head.

As seen this this picture, the RED portion of the fire sprinkler on the LEFT (the glass bulb) takes around 160-165 degrees of constant heat to activate. When this occurs, the sprinkler activates as shown the RIGHT to cool & suppress the fire.

In 2010, the State of CA required fire sprinklers be installed in all newly constructed homes. The City of Encinitas has required sprinkler systems in many homes since incorporation in 1986, due to their life safety benefits and to minimize structure loss within the community.

MYTH: Cooking Fumes or Smoke will set off a Fire Sprinkler Head. FACT: Only the fire sprinkler head that reaches the designed, constant temperature from a fire will active. (around 160-165 degrees) #homefiresprinklerday

Did you know that both these photos are fire sprinklers?! Typically in a business you will see an exposed fire sprinkler head as shown on the left. In a home, often you won't even see the fire sprinkler, as shown on the right. (the sprinkler head is under the flat white cap)

#HomeFireSprinklerDay is Saturday, May 19. Nonprofit HFSC along with NFPA are raising awareness about the benefits of Fire Sprinklers & the protection a Home Fire Sprinkler System provides to life and property. Our on-going tweets will discuss benefits & answer questions you may have

Encinitas Fire Dept (@encinitasfire) 's Twitter Profile Photo

According to The National Fire Protection Association, fire sprinklers reduce the risk of dying in a home by 80% and reduce the risk of property damage by 70%. Those are pretty good numbers for two very important things -our lives and our homes. #homefiresprinklerday

The newer home fire sprinklers are covered with a cap, so they are nearly invisible unless you're specifically looking for them! Most ceilings are white and will have a white cap. But check out these caps for wood beams or wood ceilings.. Pretty cool, huh? #homefiresprinklerday

DON'T: Never paint the cap covering a fire sprinkler. FACT: The fire sprinkler cap has a temperature rating & will fall off in a fire so the sprinkler head can activate properly. Paint can delay the fire sprinkler's operation DO: tape and cover the cap and paint around it.
