With almost 2000 large & small dams, Maharashtra is the most heavily dammed state in India. Yet, it cannot even provide basic water access. Why, you ask? Because on top of a flawed model of water storage & supply, most of that water is subject to unequal distribution.

Rivers do not produce floods. Floods are produced by human land use decisions & practices that are shaped by greed rather than common sense. "River linking" is a false solution & altering rivers will only worsen the situation while fattening the purses of contractors.

Yes, our wild water buffaloes are not celebrated or cherished. We also had a milroy buffalo sanctuary, which was de-reserved. Recently, the govt has cleared it up - unfortunately there are no buffaloes there anymore - but over time animals will move in from Kaziranga!

“A river cannot be managed in fragments. It must be understood in flow. Through flood songs. Through migration patterns. Through rituals that mark its changes. And to do that, we must listen to those who have lived with the river.” Mirza Zulfiqur Rahman 👏 Do read itswildouthere.com/blog/rivers-in…
